Diving for a living
Valiyathura is a coastal hamlet located about five kilometers away from the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.
The only port along the South Kerala coast was located here until it was declared inactive in the early eighties. Coir products formed a big chunk of exports through the port.
Real life heroes
Today an old pier stands at Valiyathura as a remnant of the golden past. For the local fisher folk the pier is the launch pad of their catamarans, especially during monsoon season when the sea is rough.
When the fishermen venture out into the sea daring turbulent breakers, it is a breathtaking sight for the visitors.
Evening picnic
The 703-feet long pier is a favoured choice of city residents to spend evenings. Visitors relax here in the caress of cool breeze, watching the blue sea turning to a majestic expanse of golden waters.
Those interested can try their hand at angling also. Valiyathura is only a drive away from the Shanghumugham beach.
