Saffron Mundu and Thorthu
Mundu, a long cotton cloth is one of the most casual dresses of Kerala. It is normally doubled and draped around the waist. Men of Kerala usually wear it on formal occasions whereas in the rural parts of the state, it is still the favourite attire.
The colour and style of Mundu vary in accordance with different occasions. For example, on religious occasions, men tend to wear a Mundu coloured with saffron. A same coloured thorthu, a small piece of cloth worn on the top, completes the attire.
Most popular during the annual Sabarimala pilgrimage season, this dress code has almost become a synonym to the religious culture of Kerala. These saffron dhotis are mostly hand made and are cheap. It takes 2 to 3 days to weave a saffron mundu.
