Nilgiri Tahrs at Eravikulam National Park
Nilgiri Tahr, known locally as varayadu, is a species of wild goat found in the Nilgiri Hills of the Western Ghats in Kerala, South India. The largest existing population of these animals is seen at the Eravikulam (Iravikulam) National Park where they are kept in their natural habitat. The park has been designed to protect this fast disappearing species, which was declared a national park in 1978.
The park is situated at Devikulam in Idukki district of Kerala, about 15 km away from the well-known hill station of Munnar. The place is endowed with a lot of natural beauty, being covered with grasslands. Visitors are not allowed into the park during the monsoons, since it is the mating season of the animal.
