Neelakurinji - the wonder bloom of Kerala
The misty hills of Munnar located in the Idukki district of Kerala, South India is a tourist’s haven, blessed with a rich variety of exotic flora and fauna.
This hill station is situated about 1600 m above sea level. Here, once in twelve years, the Neelakurinji flower, endemic to certain parts of the Nilgiri hills in the Western Ghats blooms in vast stretches, turning the hill slopes of Munnar into carpets of blue and purple.
Scientifically known as Strobilanthes kunthiana, these flowers grow on the shola grasslands of the western ghats.
