Chenathandum Cherupayarum Thoran

Ingredients

Chopped chenathandu (elephant yam - 1 cup
Cherupayar (green gram) - 1 cup (soaked)
Grated coconut - 1 cup
Green chilli – 3
Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
Garlic - 4 flakes
Cumin seeds- 1 tsp
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
Urad dal (black gram) - 1 tsp
Dry red chilli – 4
Curry leaves
Oil
Salt to taste

Method of preparation

For preparing this dish, begin by heating three teaspoons of oil in a pan. Proceed to add mustard seeds, black gram (urad dal), red chillies and curry leaves. Once the mustard seeds start to splutter, add the cherupayar (green gram) and pieces of chena thandu (stem cuttings of elephant yam). Proceed to add turmeric powder, salt and a cup of water. Cover the vessel and cook well for few seconds. Add the coconut paste, made by grinding coconut, green chillies, cumin seeds and garlic to the ingredients already in the pan. Cover the vessel and cook for some more time in low flame. Once the water content is gone, stir the mixture thoroughly and serve hot.
