Theyyam Performance
It will not be incorrect to say that Kannur is the hub of Theyyam, the majestic ritual art of Kerala. The rural temples of Kannur get a new lease of life once the Theyyam season (the months between December and April) begins. These festivals, and the particular rituals associated with them, form an integral part of Kannur’s cultural heritage.
The word Theyyam has been derived from Daivam, meaning God. Theyyam or Theyyattam (Theyyam dance) is one of the most ritualistic art forms of Kerala. However, it is not its ritualistic and folk elements that make Theyyam so unique.
Theyyam is an exceptional blend of dance and music. The songs of Theyyam are known as Thottam Pattu (pattu- song). The costume and the elaborate headgear made with natural sources like leaves, spathes, flowers and natural powders are colourful and intricate. The movements and tempo have an essentially tribal nature.
Sree Thayyil Wayanattu Kulavan temple in Kannur is famous for its annual Vellattam festival in which many Theyyam figures like Gulikan, Wayanattu Kulavan and Puliyoor Kannan are performed. In the video, one such performance in all its grandeur is shown.
