Nangyarkoothu, a classical dance drama of Kerala

Nangyarkoothu one of the oldest classical dance drama of Kerala Theatre. In dance drama performances are carried out by Nangyars, the female members of the Chakyar community, the traditional Koothu performers.

This solo dance is usually performed in the conventional temple theatre called Koothupura. This unique performance has the stories of Lord Sree Krishna as its theme. The story is told through songs and elaborate mudras which are similar to that of Kutiyattam. Mizhavu, a large percussion instrument accompanies the performance.
