Purappad - Kathakali
Purappad is one of the rites which prelude a Kathakali performance. Shown in the video is the Purappad played by the character of Lord Krishna in the play Narakasuravadham.
Only virtuous characters participate in Purappad. Thiraseela (the curtain used for Kathakali performances) would be held in front of the actor allowing only a view of the upper portion of the artiste’s body.
Aalavattams (round ornamental fans) would be held on both sides of the artiste’s face. The performance would be accompanied by song and percussion instruments. Graceful movement of hands and eyes of the artiste makes Purappad attractive.
