Chavittunatakom - a Latin Christian art form of Kerala
Chavittunatakom (Chavittunatakam) is a Latin Christian art form of Kerala. It evolved during the Portuguese colonization, at the turn of the 16th Century A.D and resembles the European Miracle Play. The actors wear Greco- Roman costumes and the language used is a mix of Tamil and Malayalam. Chinnathampi Pillai and Vedanayakam Pillai are originators of this art form.
The word Chavittu means stamping of feet and Natkam means a play. The art form has a blend of European opera, medieval historic plays and Kalarippayattu of Kerala.
