Murals- Kanjoor Church
Shown in the video are the mural paintings at the church of Our Lady in Kanjoor near Aluva in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. The paintings found here are repainted versions of ancient murals. Archangel Gabriel’s revelation, Jesus Christ and Mother Mary, Last Supper are some of the portrayals here.
Paintings based on non-biblical themes are also found in this church believed to have been built in 10th century AD. At the main entrance are portrayed different scenes based on a battle between the Travancore army and Tipu Sultan’s (ruler of the Mysore state) army. This battle took place in 1790 and is important in the history of the state.
Remnants of a glorious past are evident from the inscriptions and articles found here. One of them is a brass lamp gifted by Sakthan Thampuran, king of the erstwhile princely state of Kochi.
