Murals- Guruvayur Temple
Shown in the video are the murals of Guruvayur temple, a famous South Indian centre of worship. The murals seen today are repainted versions of the ancient murals which were damaged in a major fire in 1970. The late Mammiyoor Krishnankutty Nair, a doyen of the Kerala mural tradition led the repainting works.
The Guruvayur Devaswom, prompted by the difficulties faced in the renovation, decided to set up an institute for the revival of the mural art. Subsequently in 1989, the Institute of Mural Painting was set up near the temple with Mr. Nair as its principal. The video shows murals drawn on the walls of the Gopuram (entrance) of the temple.
