Lamayuru Monastery
Considered to be the oldest Gompa (monastery) in the Ladakh region, Lamayuru monastery belongs to the red hat sect of Buddhism. The monastery is situated about 130 kms west of Leh, the administrative headquarters of Ladakh district in Jammu and Kashmir, India’s northernmost state. Founded in the eleventh century, the monastery hosts the annual masked dance festival, which is witnessed in large number by travelers too.
