Ladakh Festival
The long procession of folks wearing traditional attires accompanied with traditional music produced by instruments such as surna and daman (shenai and drum), marks the beginning of the 15 day Ladakh festival.
The festival is celebrated every year during the first fortnight in September, from the 1st to the 15th and this vibrant event brings out Ladakh’s heritage in a haze of colours, merriment, music and dance.
Hemis monastery, one of the leading Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh holds an annual masked dance during the festival, which depicts a story of the fight between good and evil, ending with the eventual victory of the former.
