Garuda Garva Bhangam in Ottan Thullal
This video shows Garuda Garva Bhangam, a bit from Ottan Thullal which is a 300 year old performing art form in Kerala. This video features the play performed by the renowned artiste Kalamandalam Geethanandan.
Ottan Thullal has its own significance in the cultural history of Kerala. Kalakkathu Kunchan Nambiar, a famous poet invented this masterly art. It is a solo performance in which the artiste himself depicts all the characters in the story.
The excerpt in this video portrays Garuda (the carrier of Lord Krishna) meeting Hanuman, the devotee of Rama at the command of his master. Lord Krishna wants to vanquish Garuda’s pride and for that he sends him to bring wise old Hanuman who resides in the Kadali groves.
