The thrilling Onam

Onam games or Onakkalikal is the name given to the numerous games played on the occasion of the annual harvest festival of Onam. These are traditional games, both indoor and outdoor, are normally played once the grand Onam feast is over.

One such game is Kazha Kayattam, a game for men in rural areas of Kerala. In this, the wood of the Areca nut tree is well polished and is oiled (so that the surface of the wood became smooth and it will be difficult to climb) and is placed in an open ground. The participants have to climb the wood and should take the gift placed on the top. The one who is able to do this is declared as the winner.
