Nehru Trophy Boat Race
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race on the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha is one of the most popular water regattas in Kerala. Held on the second Saturday of August, every year, the event attracts not only the locals but also visitors from around the world. The history of the race is connected to India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru and his visit to Alappuzha in 1952. It was in honour of Nehru that the first race was conducted. Later, Jawaharlal Nehru donated a silver trophy for the winners of this highly competitive race.
