Kuda Chozhi – a folk dance from Malabar
Shown in this video is an excerpt of Kuda Chozhi – a folk dance, originating from the Malabar region of Kerala. Prevalent in the districts of Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram, this folk dance, performed by the peasant community is usually held after the harvest season. Kuda Chozhi is a part of Chozhikali, a popular folk art form. The dancers are called chozhis and they go visiting houses in the village and performing the dance.
Folk songs depicting interesting tales are sung by the dancers themselves. While performing, the dancers hold a small kuda (umbrella) made of palm leaf and a visari (fan) in their hands. Thudi, a folk musical instrument is the main accompaniment.
