Yakshagana

Yakshagana, a theatrical form in Karnataka is unique in the sense that it can be described both as a classical as well as a folk art form. The word Yaksha Gana means the song of Yaksha (Yakshas are the exotic tribes described in the Sanskrit literature of ancient India). This art form is a creation of the Vaishnava Bhakthi Movement.

Yakshagana lacks any kind of sophistication, either in costumes or in presentation. It is often performed even in paddy fields and directly communicates with the people. Like many other similar art forms, stories from Mahabharata and Ramayana, the Indian epics are most frequently told.

This theatrical art is an amalgamation of dancing, singing, drumming, gestures and colorful costumes. Hence the visual and auditory appeal is to the maximum.

Traditionally, a Yakshagana team consists of 15 to 20 actors and they cover villages on foot. Once they reach a temple, they erect a simple stage and perform. There will be no women in the team.

Yakshagana has a tradition of entertaining the rural folk dating back to the 17 th century. This classical folk theatre has well retained its antique and traditional features.
