Rajasthani Folk Dance
Rajasthan, the state of deserts, never deserves the name when it comes to its art forms. The dances and the dazzling costumes have made Rajasthan one of the most colourful states in India.
Each region in Rajasthan has its own dance varieties and these dances stick strictly to their traditional flavors. The dances are more lively and spontaneous, drawing a sharp contrast with the stillness of the deserts.
The folk dances of Rajasthan are mostly performed during festivals and other ceremonial occasions. Each of these dances is accompanied by a particular type of music, unique to the cultural ambience of each region.
The Rajasthani dance has many variations, like the Bhavai dance in which the female dancers dance balancing seven or eight pitchers on their heads; Chari, a replica of the process of bringing water; Gair, a colorful dance performed both by men and women and so on and so forth.
The Ghoomar dance from Udaipur and Kalbeliya dance of Jaisalmer have gained international recognition.
