Twinkling Xmas Stars
"Where is the newborn King of the Jews? We have seen his star as it arose, and we have come to worship him.”
Mathew 2:2
Commemorating the twinkling magnificent star that guided the Magi or the three wise men to Bethlehem, Christians all over the world hoist stars during Christmas.
Glittering nights
Christmas is the season of starry nights in Kerala. Varicoloured stars are hung along main streets, churches and homes.
Stars have a clear domination over other Christmas paraphernalia in the Kerala market. Shops will have umpteen numbers of designs in different colours and geometric shapes. Here is the video of a star decked night at LMS church in Thiruvananthapuram.
Traditional Star
In good old days Christmas stars were sans decorations and alterations. Only conventional five pointed designs in white were used. For lighting, candles were placed inside the stars. Even today candle lighted stars can be seen in traditional homes especially in the rural areas.
Long tradition
Christianity in Kerala is as old as the religion itself. St. Thomas, the Apostle, reached Kerala in AD 52 and the state boasts of the first church in the Indian subcontinent.
