West Bengal Jute Products
Surajkund Crafts Mela (fair) is one of the festivals which have a unique feature of celebrating countries rich handloom and handicraft tradition. This carnival is held annually at Surajkund, underway on the outskirts of Delhi- Haryana border during the month of February.
The video shows the jute craft tradition in the state of West Bengal in India. Major jute products are plush jute-blended carpets, decorative tapestries, garden pot hangings, decorative hand bags and bedspreads.
Jute, the 'golden fibre' has traditionally been woven and knotted and braided by Bengali women, often for domestic storage. Jute as a fabric was much popular in ancient times. Today Bengal is a major producer of jute products.
