Terracotta Images from Uttar Pradesh

The art of working in terracotta is of greater antiquity in Uttar Pradesh. Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh is famous for its ornately decorated terracotta horse. In India terracotta figures are the epitome of religious expression conveyed through clay.

The potters of this region make hand appliquéd ornamented animal figures like horses and elephants. Figures of goddesses moulded into lamps, bowls, jugs as well as other ritual items are crafted here by hand. These figures are essential part of the wedding decoration in the state.
