The Applique craft from Orissa
It is the traditional applique craft from the state of Orissa in the Surajkund Crafts fair in Haryana. This craft festival is a rare opportunity to experience India’s extensive handicraft and artistic tradition.
Appliqué is a temple based craft which embellishes Lord Jagannath’s umbrella and fan in the annual festival of Puri Jagannath temple. The major centre of this craft is Pippli near Bhuvaneshwar in Orissa. Appliqué is a decorative design made of one material sewn over another.
The appliqué work is done with great care and these charming motifs in vivid colours include flowers, birds and other decorative themes. Softer pastel shades are used for garden umbrellas, lampshades and hand bags.
