Sujata -1959
Once again Bimal Roy hits the silver screens with his ideas and ideologies. Sujata released in the year 1959 was his response toward the social evil of untouchability. The story part, where a romance between a Brahmin boy and an untouchable woman is explored, was borrowed from a Bengali novel of the same title by Subodh Ghosh.
The film was nominated for Golden Palm award in the 1960 Cannes Film Festival. Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Lalita Pawar and Shashikala were the lead cast. Music was by S. D. Burman and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Jalte Hain Jiske Liye Teri Aankhon Ke Diye a soothing song rendered by Talat Mehmood was unique for the fact that the entire song is sung over telephone. Kaali Ghata Chhaye Mora Jiya Tarsaaye by Asha Bosle is another hit song from this film.
