Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam - 1962
Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, released in 1962 is remembered for its excellent acting, brilliant cinematography, rhythmic music and sensitive lyrics. The film features the debauched lifestyle of Bengali zamindars at the end of 19th century in India.
Commercially successful, the film is much acclaimed for the outstanding performance of Meena Kumari as Chhoti Bahu. An alcoholic wife, Chhoti Bahu who is not content to be a docile wife and fights for her husband's love and attention, demanding her own sexual needs be met. Critics say that Chhoti Bahu is one of the greatest performances ever seen on the Silver Screen.
Directed by Abrar Alvi and produced by Guru Dutt, the film is a cinematic adaptation of Bengali novel, Saheb Bibi Golam by Bimal Mitra. Besides Meena Kumari, the film also stars Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman in lead roles. The film also won the President’s Silver Medal for Best Feature Film in Hindi for the year 1962.
The music of the film was by Hemant Kumar and the popular songs from the film are "Na Jao Saiyan Chhudaake Baiyan", "Koi Door Se Aawaaz De Chale Aao", "Piya Aiso Jiya Mein Samaaye Gayo Re", "Bhanwara Bada Naadaan" and "Koi Door Se Aawaaz De Chale Aao".
