Heer Raanjha - 1970

A film directed by a father and produced by his son. Heer Raanjha, 1970, directed by Chetan Anand and produced by Ketan Anand was based on a Punjabi epic poem (or Heer) written by Waris Shah in 1766. What brings Heer Raanjha especially to our list is the unique fact that the entire film and its dialogues are verse form written by none other than the great Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi.

Heer Raanjha was also noted for its excellent cinematography by Jal Mistry who wielded camera for most of Chetan Anand’s films. The film stars Raaj Kumar, Priya Rajvansh, Pran, Prithviraj Kapoor, Ajit, Jayant, Sonia Sahni, Kamini Kaushal, Indrani Mukherjee, Achla Sachdev and Tun Tun. Madan Mohan composed the soundtracks for the film for which lyrics were penned by Kaifi Azmi. “Milo Na Tum To” by Lata Mangeshkar and “Ye Duniya Yeh Mehfil” by Mohammad Rafi are some of the hit songs from this film.
