Dillagi - 1949
The 1949 Hindi film Dillagi was noted for the presence of the celebrated singing star of that era Suraiya, popularly known as Malika-e-Tarannum (Melody Queen). The film has Suraiya at her best, rendering beautiful songs like Me Tere Chand Tu mere Chand. The music of the film was by Naushad.
Directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar and written by Azm Bazidpuri the plot of the film revolves around a tragic love story. The film also stars Shyam Kumar and Shyam in other major roles. Just like some of the other films with a rustic background Dillagi also has a village girl gang which the director and the writer developed very skillfully. But unlike the other film which drops this concept of girl gangs as the narrative proceeds to more important things, the one in Dillagi stays longer and plays a crucial part in the narrative.
