Awara directed by Raj Kapoor, one of the most popular Indian cinemas

Awara, or The Tramp, Hindi cinema produced and directed by Raj Kapoor in 1951 is one of the most popular movies of India.

The film's plot is centered on the conjoining lives of impoverished Raj and the spoiled Rita. Raj lives a life of starvation and poverty after being left by his wealthy judicial father who forced his mother out of the house when he suspected her of infidelity. In his childhood, Raj becomes friends with Rita, but the judge, who is Rita's guardian after she is orphaned, ends their friendship, although they think about each other often.

The film was cast in an interesting manner, as Raj Kapoor chose artists in an intimate setting. For instance; Raj himself plays the lead character Raj Ragunath, and his own father, Prithviraj Kapoor, makes a cameo appearance as Judge Raghunath. Indian actress Nargis plays Rita. Leela Raghunath, Raj's sister, plays Leela Chitnis, Jagga plays K.N. Singh, Lee Mishra plays Raghunath's sister-in-law, Cukoo as the bar dancer, Helen as the dancer, Shashi Kapoor as young Raj, and Prem Nath in a cameo appearance.

The film was produced and directed by Raj Kapoor, with a storyline written by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas and V.P. Sathe. Cinematography was supervised by Radhu Karmakar and music was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan with lyrics by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri.

Although this film didn't win any true awards, it was ranked in the top 25 must see Bollywood films by Indiaties Movies in 2005.
