The Bihu festival of Assam
A festival that is assumed to date back to 3500 BC, TheBihu festival of Assam is celebrated three times a year. Of these, the one celebrated in the harvest season is the most important. It is known as the Rongali or Bohaag Bihu. The festival also marks the beginning of the spring season.
Colourful rituals and festivities mark the occasion of Bihu. The state gets into a festive mood, with the people wearing new clothes, greeting each other and distributing Pitha, a sweet cake associated with the celebrations.
And.. the night is never a time to remain indoors. Specially conducted Bihu fairs, full of games and fun-filled activities, beckon the people, with all their charm and splendour.
