Sculptures at Undavalli caves in Vijayawada
Undavalli caves, impressive four storyed rock cut temple excavated 6th or 7th century, are located in the city of Vijayawada at Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh state, India.
In the fourth floor of this cave one can see a huge statue of Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture. Other shrines in the cave are dedicated to Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva). These caves are also dedicated to Anantha Padmanabha Swamy and Narisimha Swamy.
The rock cut architecture at Undavalli is included among the earliest example of Gupta architecture. Sculptures in the caves depict various mythological characters for example on the third floor one can see the seated Narada and Thumbura.
The structure of these caves resembles the Buddhist viharas in their architectural and sculptural proficiency, and can be seen as signs of a past Buddhist culture.
