Ayyappanpaattu - in honor of Lord Ayyappa
The pilgrimage to the famous Sabarimala temple in Kerala, South India is seasonal because the temple remains open only during some months of the year. During this season, people participate in gatherings where Ayyappan Paattu or songs in praise of Lord Ayyappa, is sung. The songs narrate the deeds of Lord Ayyappa and seek his blessings for the welfare of everyone.
The songs are a collection of seven basic types known as andissevam, pulissevam, eezhassevam, ilavarassevam, velissevam, panthalassevam and velarssevam respectively. It is known also as udukku paattu since the musical instrument udukku is used as accompaniment to the songs.
