Chavittu Nadakam - Christian classical art form
Chavittu Nadakam or Chavittunatakam is a colourful Christian classical art form which originated in Cochin during the 16th century CE. Chavittu means stomping of feat and Natakam means drama. Played like a dance drama, Chavittunatakam originated among the Latin Catholics in the early phase of Portuguese colonization in Kerala state.
Distinguished with its elaborate costumes, interesting make-up of characters, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements, the art form has many similarities with the European Opera.
The video shown here is the Chavittu Nadakam performance by the artistes of Kreupasanam Pauranika Renga Kalapeedam, the cultural academy and training centre for the development of folk and ancient Christian art forms situated at Kalavoor in Alappuzha district.
