Among Indian cinema's best films it portrays the lives of two strangers as their relationship unfolds, having never met, and talking only on the telephone. He is a young writer, staying temporarily all alone, in his friend’s decrepit mansion. She is a kept, but rejected woman, reaching out nightly to strangers on the phone. As their conversions continue there are subtle, yet perverse changes in both of them, as he loses his cynicism of her, and she her aloofness with him.
