Awaara, 1951

A masterwork from a master craftsman in which his real-life father stars as his on-screen father. Awaara released in the year 1951 is one of the greatest of all films made by Raj Kapoor. Kapoor directed, produced and played the lead role in the film.

The word awaara in Hindi means tramp. The film depicts the intermingled lives of poor Raj and privileged Rita (played by Nargis). The song awaara hoon from this film got more popularity than the film. Music was composed by Shankar Jaikishen and lyrics were by Shailendra. The film became a sensation in many of the countries where it was released including Soviet Union and China.

Prithviraj Kapoor Raj Kapoor’s real life father is there in the film as his on-screen father. His father Dewan Bashwanath Kapoor also played a cameo role in his only film appearance.
